Whole School Events
At Deepdene Primary School, our whole school events are a highlight of the year and play an important role in building community connection and school spirit.
Our weekly Monday morning assemblies are an important part of school life, bringing students and staff together to celebrate achievements, share learning and strengthen our sense of community. Parents and carers are always warmly invited to attend, helping to build strong connections between home and school. Throughout the year we also host Celebration Assemblies which give different year levels an opportunity to showcase their latest creations and learnings to the wider school community.

At Deepdene Primary School, we value and celebrate the diversity of our community by recognising culturally significant events throughout the year. This includes celebrations such as Chinese New Year, where students engage in activities and learning experiences that build understanding, respect and appreciation of different cultures, aligning with our broader commitment to inclusion and global awareness.
We also hold a formal Anzac Day Commemorative Service each year. This respectful assembly provides an opportunity for our school community to come together to honour and remember the service and sacrifice of those who have served our country.
In even-numbered years, we host our much-loved Colour Run, an energetic and joy-filled event where students are covered in colour as they run, laugh and celebrate together. It’s always a crowd favourite, with some very lucky students even earning the chance to ‘slime the principal’.

In odd-numbered years, our Big Day Out transforms the school into a vibrant fairground, complete with rides, food, stalls and activities. This event provides a wonderful opportunity to welcome the wider community into our school and the ever-popular ‘Choc-O-Block’ is consistently a highlight of the day.
Our annual Athletics Day is held at Bill Stewart Reserve, where the whole school comes together to enjoy a day of physical activity, teamwork and house spirit. Students in Foundation to Year 2 participate in a range of fun athletics games and challenges on their own oval, while students in Years 3 to 6 compete in a variety of events including the 100m sprint, hurdles, shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump, high jump and relay races- including the much-loved students vs teachers relay. Students dress in their house colours and compete for points in a fun, encouraging and supportive environment. While the focus is on participation, times, distances and measurements are recorded with students who perform strongly having the opportunity to progress to District, Division and Regional competitions.

Our House Cross Country is held at Stradbroke Park and encourages all students to challenge themselves and build endurance. Students run age-appropriate distances: Foundation students complete 400m; Years 1 and 2 run 800m; 9–10 year olds run 2km; and 11–12 year olds run 3km. Students proudly represent their houses, dressing in house colours and competing for points. The emphasis is on participation and supporting all students to finish, while more competitive runners may have the opportunity to progress to District, Division and Regional competitions.

Our House Swimming Carnival, held in Term 4, is open to students in Years 3 to 6 and provides a fun and inclusive way to finish the school year. Students sign up for events prior to the day, dress in house colours and enthusiastically cheer on their peers. In addition to competitive races, students can participate in novelty events and enjoy time in a supervised games pool when not competing. The focus is on participation, house spirit and enjoyment, ensuring all students feel confident and included regardless of their swimming ability or experience.

A much-anticipated tradition on the final day of the school year is the Teachers vs Year 6 Netball Game. This friendly (and often very competitive) match is always a highlight for students, with younger year levels especially enjoying the lively atmosphere and spirited rivalry. Families are welcome to come along and join in the excitement as we celebrate the end of the year together.
At the end of each school year, we come together for ‘Deepdene on the Green’. The day begins with a whole-school art show before families gather for a picnic on the oval and enjoy performances from each year level, an occasion that proudly showcases the creativity, confidence and spirit of our students.

Parents’ Association
The Deepdene Primary Parents’ Association is a very active part of the school community. Our aim is to create an engaging and vibrant hub for all students and to foster a strong and supportive community spirit among the parents of the school, thereby enhancing every student’s sense of belonging.
We create this environment by providing many fun activities for both the children and parents throughout the year. Icy Pole Friday’s, Hot Cross Buns at Easter, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day stalls and our bi-annual Big Day Out Festival are just a few activities organised for the children to enjoy. Various social nights, family days, our Ladies Luncheon and Dad’s Bowls Night provide an opportunity for parents to connect and socialise in a relaxed atmosphere.
Joining the Parents’ Association is a great way to keep informed, learn new skills and make new friends. Your contribution can be as large or small as you can manage and your ongoing support of the DPA is invaluable.
The Parents’ Association meets once a month and pre-school children are welcome. Attending our meetings provides the opportunity to actively be involved in the events the Parents’ Association organise for the children and their families. Becoming a class coordinator, helping to organise an event, offering your knowledge and expertise in your field of work or donating your time where you can are a few ways you can help.
We also create Friendship lists for each year level which provide contact details of the families in your child’s class. It is a wonderful resource for organising student play dates, birthday invitations and parent catch ups. The consent forms are sent home via your child in the first few weeks of the school term.
Our most important objective is to coordinate events for the students and families and to create a welcoming environment. Additionally we raise funds for the school, facilitating the purchase of items that enhance the enjoyment of school for all the children. Recently, we have provided a projector and large screen for the school hall, a class set of computer tablets, sports uniforms, re-landscaping the Foundation Playground and building a sensory/friendship garden with totem poles painted by the students. Last year we contributed funding for air conditioning and heating in the Centenary Hall and we continue to raise money for items on our current ‘wish list’.
